I certainly agree that we need to try new things to get boys to read! I think stories need to be both educational and exciting to fit boys' requirements for a good read. It sounds like you are a great influence on boy readers!

This is encouraging. The purpose of punishment shouldn't be revenge, but teaching people not to repeat wrong actions and protecting others from their deeds.

Linda Goodnight, I'm afraid I'm not up on the current books intended more for girls. Wish I could be helpful on that. I do get lots of girls reading and commenting on my books. You might try one like North Woods Poachers which also has 2 girls in it along with the 2 boy cousins.

I loved the Hardy Boys books. I started out reading Nancy Drew but once I discovered Frank and Joe I left Nancy in the dust. 8-)

Truth is, I STILL like to periodically go back and read the original Hardy Boys series. On top of the reasons I love the Hardy Boys as an eternal kid, as an adult, I love to read when their Dad shows up on a case and hear the boys' excited exclamation of "DAD!"

No, I'm one of the blessed ones who have had both parents in my life, all my life. But reading books like the Hardy Boys is comforting in the midst of the grief of so many splintered families.

Max, you've taken me back in time this AM! I used to be a big fan of Nancy Drew while I was in elementary school! I thought that she was a smart, courageous woman that most children could admire. I loved that she could take clues and solve mysteries within the span of a novel. Looking forward to hearing more about your books.

Though my focus is on books that boys will read, I've found that girls love them as much or more. My template for this comes from years and years of producing dramatic films for the same age group. Boys wouldn't watch a girl's story, but girls would watch one about boys.

I'm on the ACFW loop and found your blog that way. As a former teacher of the age group you write for and a mom of a reluctant reader, I totally agree with your approach. The only thing I've noticed though is that many girls today, including my daughter, are also reluctant readers. They like humor but don't lean toward adventure as much as boys do. Any suggestions on Christian authors who address the same need for girls 10-13?

I just finished reading your Newspaper Caper and I love it. I'm anxious to recommend it to intermediate and above teachers who are always looking for books that will "hook" the guys. Newspaper Caper (and I presume all your books) have a big guy look and feel, but the readability and print size make it perfect for struggling and reluctant readers. THANK YOU, Max Elliot Anderson.
