A Boy & His Dog, a train, a circus, and loving parents…what could go wrong, right?

A Boy

& His Dog

A train

A circus, and loving parents…what could go wrong, right?

That’s the story of Barney and the Runaway where Michael learns the important lesson that you don’t know how good you have it till it’s gone.

Barney and the Runaway is about Michael Ellis who has recently told his parents to start calling him Mike from now on. He especially didn’t like the way they were always telling him what to do. Mike pretends to run away for a day with his dog Barney. Maybe then his parents will change.

The plan gets a bit more complicated when Mike and Barney climb into a railroad box car, fall asleep, and end up in Georgia with a circus in the middle of the night. Fortunately for the runaways, Big Bob the Clown takes Mike and Barney to safety in his wagon. Mike thinks that living and performing with the circus might be a good life until Big Bob opens Mike's eyes to his tragic past.

Mike’s encounter with this grown up runaway helps him to understand that his parents truly love him. Then Mike and Barney save the circus. Through it all, Mike learns the importance of family.

Parents will appreciate Barney and the Runaway, but kids will love it.

Barney and the Runaway Available in bookstores and online. For readers 8 and up - especially boys.

Now available on Kindle

                Lost Island Smugglers

This book was released in print on August 1, 2010. Now it is also available on Kindle.

Synopsis_________________________________

Lost Island Smugglers

Author: Max Elliot Anderson

Audience: 8 – 12

Words: 33000

Sam Cooper had only recently moved to Florida when he met Tony at his new church. Tony’s father owned a marina.

Sam, Tony, and Tyler took scuba lessons together. Tony got them in for free. After they completed the course, the boys decided to try out their new skills in the real world…the ocean. The only problem was, none of them had permission.

While Tony’s father was away on a buying trip, the boys took one of the rental sailboats out for their diving adventure. Everything went well until the biggest storm Tony had ever seen, blew up from out of nowhere. Their boat was smashed to splinters and the boys found themselves stranded on Lost Island.

But, if they thought the worst had happened, they were wrong. The boys discovered a secret hideout that was used by drug runners in high powered speedboats.

Sam and his friends had to find a way to stop them, but how? And, even if they could, what were they going to tell their parents when they got home?

Flash! Just received this email.
Hey Max, I just finished the book and really enjoyed it. Kind of took me back to my younger days when every day seemed to be an adventure, especially boat adventures. My grandson, who turns four on Sunday, will probably enjoy your books in a few short years. He and his parents are over in Germany at the moment where his dad is serving in the Army. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next book that comes out in Kindle format. Thanks for the entertainment.

Authors Fair Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook, IL.

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to participate in the Authors Fair at Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook, IL. The new building is finished but the surrounding area is still under construction. This is one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve seen. They were able to get their referendum passed just before the recent economic crash.

Over 30 authors were there. It was nice to be able to talk with so many and share information and ideas. In these pictures, we were just getting set up.

Watching Red-bellied Woodpeckers

This is probably my favorite time of year. New plants are poking their heads out of the ground around here, trees are budding, and the birds are active. Have you been following any of the live eagle cams? I’ve watched the one in Virginia since just after the eggs were hatched. Take a look at the three babies if you haven’t already. They’re getting pretty big.

In our own back yard, our feeder has become more popular every day. Two of our favorites have been a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Here’s a link to lots of information about these beautiful birds http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-bellied_Woodpecker/id

It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. So, enjoy these pictures from my back yard.

Get Your Kids Outside

Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids
Spring is a great time to think about getting your kids outside into the sunshine and fresh air. Many times I've talked about getting kids off the couch and into activities besides their computer, the TV, video games, or other electronic devices. A new book, 15 Minutes Outside provides 365 ways to get out of the house and connect with your kids.

What if you got outside every day, and what if you could get your kids to come along? It sounds modest, but the effects, as dynamic outdoor spokesperson Rebecca Cohen herself can testify, are profound. This inspiring collection of activities gives families an idea for every day of the year, requiring little planning, no expertise and relatively little resources (time, cash, or patience!), no matter where they live. Simple and inspiring, this book is bursting with hundreds of easy ways to get your family out into nature a little bit every day.
And on day 366, make sure to read books for boys under a tree someplace.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher at no cost.

International Children's Book Day

Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, April 2, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books.

Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading. Many IBBY Sections promote ICBD through the media and organize activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is linked to celebrations around children's books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions or announcements of book awards.

So celebrate the day by going to the library and checking out a few children's books or read a children's book with your kids today.
